hiroshima and miyajima

we spent a day going down south to hiroshima. we took a shinkansen bullet train. it's one of the fastest trains in the world, and costs about the same as a domestic plane flight!

on the morning of august 6th 1945 the first atomic bomb was dropped on hiroshima. scary stuff. hiroshima dome was located pretty much directly under the point of detonation and was the only building left standing. all that remains of the dome is the steel structure, the heat from the blast melted the concrete.

here are many peace monuments and museums in hiroshima. we spent an afternoon in the peace museum, but didn't feel much like talking pictures...

30 minutes down the road from hiroshima is the famous miyajima shrine island. an island with temples first founded in 590. one of the most photographed sites in japan in the floating o-tori that the priests used to sail through

and once through o-tori you'd land at itsukushima "floating" shrine.

lots more toris on the land, and scary stone lion things.

during the summer this place is meant to be packed. come early winter and the tiniest bit of cold and just look how busy it is, not!

yay! afro ken! now endorsing ice cream!

on the way home at hiroshima station i got myself on the big screen! thats me in the red jacket with me arms up. no really, it is! (pretty blurry huh?)
